Capture life 365–week 48

Riana and I spent a couple of days visiting with mums in the Imuka program and seeing the progress their businesses are making. Day one we drove as far as we could, then shared a boda (motorbike taxi) to get through the muddy roads that the van wouldn’t make it through. More on that later!

It was awesome to see just how far these mums have come in the time they’ve been with us.  Most have already been able to reinvest profit to expand their businesses, some have been able to put their children in school for the first time and others move into safer homes. week 48 2Pauline dries and sells mukene (small fish). She’s been able to buy supplies to start making craftwork to sell for extra income as well as build a small three room home which is much more secure and larger than the tiny room they used to live in and she can also rent one room out which adds to her income. She’s got an amazing head for business and is doing great!week 48 3week 48 4week 48 6She prepared a treat of mukene for me which I couldn’t refuse. Riana got it on all video, insisting that she video while I eat! So very kind of her. Little eyes, brains and all. A protein packed tick off my bucket list.week 48 8The problem with travelling through our villages potholed roads after the rain is that you have to pick your ‘hole’  but you don’t know how deep it is til you’re going through it. The other little problem is the mud. It’s slippery. And you slide. A lot. And if you’re on the back of the boda you naturally ask if you should get off and walk to be told “yes” by your driver who then carries on riding and sliding with you both on the back while you hold onto your phone, daughter and handbag in that order. For fear of losing them. Or landing in a compromising position with the driver. Great conditions for ducks though. Who did.not.even.move out of our way. week 48 9week 48 14So halfway back, our driver pulls over with a sheepish look on his face. We’d run out of fuel. There are NO fuel stations anywhere near where we are. Not to worry. We just tip the bike over to move the remnants of fuel into the right part of the tank. Blow into the gas hole (as demonstrated by our ‘determined not to leave us stranded’ driver above), and carry on. Making sure to turn the ignition off whenever enough speed to cruise has accumulated. We made it home with a few bonus laughs on the way!

week 48 20Thankful for screen lit laptops and thirty minutes of battery power while trying to put together an Imuka promo video.

week 48 21Day two of our visits – and it was such a joy to see Barbara and hear how far she’s come. A little of her story is included in the Imuka video which you can watch here. Gods redemptive power at work.

week 48 24One of our favourite visits was to this mum of six also looking after a grandchild and supporting her own mother. Her mum is an absolute gem and could be a stunt double for my grandmother. And that’s the truth. Except for the small difference in skin colour. In such an unexpected way, it did my heart good to spend time with her, holding hands and talking in broken sentences that I’m sure she struggled to understand just as much as I struggled to put together. From the softness of her hands, to her facial features, to the colour of her dress. This would be my Nan had she been born in Uganda. As we were about to leave she wanted to lock Riana in her room to keep her – again, something it wouldn’t seem strange for my own grandmother to do! God knew I needed that!window1A little mishap with the office keys and the need for another key from a bag inside the office meant a break in was absolutely necessary. Not to worry. Joe, Drew and Kennedy were totally onto it.

First step. Try opening the window latch with some wire.window2When that fails, try softening the putty with kerosene and chipping away at it to remove the glass in one piece.window3When you realise the putty is too old to soften anytime this year, use a glass cutter to cut a hole – just like on the movies. Except it doesn’t go quite as smoothly as they make out, so just smash the window any way you can and get that latch undone. Find a fishing rod and long piece of wood to retrieve the bag as of course it’s on the opposite side of the room to the window. window4Gently pull bag through security bars (which we found out are actually very secure!) and waa-la! Success. Go to local hardware and buy more glass and putty. Replace window and that’s a rap. As well as an afternoons entertainment.

week 48 35aBaby Cathy. melt.my.heart.

week 48 36End of year staff outing to the zoo. Deciding what they’re looking at. Not sure if it was the dried elephant dung or the crocodile remains. Their faces crack me up! Above and below!zoo1week 48 39We literally, just found a baby elephant walking around. How cool is that!!week 48 41week 48 42week 48 43week 48 44Some of our team, just going for a walk with an elephant. No big deal. We walk with elephants all the time.week 48 52Sometimes you just gotta dance. And when the music’s playing there’s no better time! Or backdrop!week 48 53We did some exploring in an old construction site built out onto Lake Victoria at the zoo. It had filled up with water from the mornings rain making it an awesome place for an impromtu photo shoot of all the families.week 48 61week 48 50week 48 57week 48 62Learning the fine art of skimming stones.week 48 51Love. his. smile! So thankful for Kennedy who helps keep our place safe and is so fun to have around!

Capture life 365–week 47

If you’re wondering why I’m posting pics of Uganda when you’ve seen us in NZ the last few weeks – I do know where I am and what week it is (well, actually I don’t have any idea what day it is let alone what week, I just know I’m behind and determined to catch up!). So onto life in previous weeks…!

week 47 4Paying close attention in the Early Learning Centre despite it looking like one boy was falling asleep! (Caught in an unfortunate mid blink!)fishingweek 47 10Princess – our new office assistant, making herself at home!week 47 17So I found out 2 weeks before we were due to leave for NZ that because we weren’t flying direct to NZ my passport would be 2 weeks short of being valid and I needed a new one. I was told if I got my application in by the end of the day it should arrive anywhere between 2 days before or up to the day we were due to fly. No pressure. Well, apparently taking passport photos is quite a skill and because it had to be a digital format and not a scanned copy we had to do it ourselves. EIGHT HOURS and SEVENTY FOUR attempts later (not including all the deleted pics) we had a winner that immigration said passed!passport 1Take photo, download onto computer, upload onto immigration passport photo checker. Get told what’s wrong with your photo, try again.passport 2Try a different location to avoid ‘shadow behind head’, download, upload and get told to try again. Start to feel dejected after 5 hours and ring friends to see how on earth you get rid of shadow behind head that you can’t even see and other things wrong with your face. passport 3Get told by photographer (a.k.a eldest daughter) who you love dearly, except for maybe that 5th hour “Can you try and look a bit happy?” Followed by “just try not to do your unimpressed look.” There may or may not have been a little tear come to my eye. But it did make me laugh. And cry. All at the same time.week 47 21So we decided to lighten things up a bit because it didn’t look like we were going to have any success anyway. We put this shot in and they didn’t.even.comment.about.my.eyes. I just had too much ‘shadow behind my head’. I wanted to write them a very lovely letter. Anyway, three hours and some serious photoshop later we had a winner – just before the end of the day. We found a friend who had an actual address that a courier would hopefully be able to find as opposed to ‘turn by the big billboard between the small butcher and the cobbler, follow the dirt road to the chicken feed shop and turn right’.  Application submitted on time. Our church friends prayed with us 2 days later for speedy processing and delivery so I wouldn’t have to stress up to the last day not knowing if I could fly with the family. The next day I get an email saying it was ready (processed 8 working days early!), and in my hands just 2 days after that. I wanted to send Kate from the UK NZ passport office chocolates since I couldn’t kiss her on the cheek. But settled for enjoying them for her once I got to NZ. Happy ending.

week 47 22Love seeing how far this mum has come – now helping us care for children in the childcare and doing an amazing job!week 47 24Charlotte and Shabella both in their element!week 47 25week 47 26Lily and Burrito – just hanging out.

week 47 27Knowing my enjoyment of herbal teas, Lily took it upon herself to make me a fresh one. Nastursum petals, rosemary and lemongrass –all from the garden. Not too bad.  Even if I had to keep picking the lemongrass out of my teeth. Sweet girl!

week 47 28Third failed attempt at colouring Joe’s hair blue. Although this time the skin did stay blue longer than the first two attempts!

week 47 29We had a bit of rain at church which decided to join us in the van as we left. Great amusement for everyone except the person whose seat was under the downpour!

week 47 30After three years of faithfully tending his coffee tree, Jed finally has flowers! Which means beans are coming! Hopefully when we get back he’ll be able to do his first roast!

Capture life 365–week 46

week 46 3Another month of frequent days without power – thankful for the red Ryobi wonder that we can fire up when needed.

week 46 4Just as we were coming right from the flu, we get slammed by a stomach bug. I know I said I’d much rather do vomit over poop, but maybe I wasn’t being completely honest. I’m really not that much better at vomit.  I blame it on eight rounds of morning sickness. Anyway, Pete once again came to the rescue and dealt with the laundry after FOUR complete bed changes in one night, while I gagged my way through washing clumps of carrots out of hair. I think we’re going to start taking lessons on how to aim for the bowl.

week 46 5Learning about God creating the earth and plants in the Early Learning program – getting creative with clay from termite mounds!shedrahTyre rolling fun!

week 46 12Not being able to walk doesn’t stop Brian from being a star football player! This guy is amazing with his hands!week 46 13week 46 14Second attempt to dye Josiah’s hair blue. Second fail. Although it did have a slight blue tinge until he washed it.week 46 16week 46 18Slowly turning into a smurf.

week 46 19We had an an amazingly talented local facepainter come to our weekly kids & mums get together at a friends place to celebrate a birthday – a fun surprise for the younger kids! The older kids were nowhere to be found for the photo! Pikers.week 46 20week 46 21
