The Hatchling

Chickens and backyards just seem to go together. Chickens, backyards and children are even better together - and chicken, curry and rice are better still. Yip, I love me some chicken whether they’re running around my backyard or on my plate, but even more than chickens running around, I love baby chicks – who doesn’t? And I don’t mean to eat, that’d just be wrong. This week the four eggs that Drew had put under our broody hens hatched – so we get babies! Wishing we’d saved up a few more eggs to put under them now!

The kids got to see chicken nugget No3 hatch which was pretty cool! (see youtube clip below where all you hear is ooh, oooh and oooooooooooh). Who says we don’t do much school – science at it’s best I say! Jed says his rooster is awesome and he did a real good job - which proves that the kids must be learning because not everyone knows you need a rooster and a hen to get baby chicks as good looking as ours. I must say at 2, 4 and 6 in the mornings I don’t think Jeds rooster is so awesome, in fact I sometimes have some quite violent thoughts towards it, but this week I’ve shown him a bit more love as he does make cute babies (which better all be girls). Our guard is interested in taking Jeds rooster off our hands for us, so currently Jeds trying to trade it for a milking cow – don’t know how that’s going to turn out for him. I think the latest offer was for a goat, but Jeds sticking to the cow for now. I think it’s safe to say Mr Rooster won’t be going anywhere for a while yet.
And now for your educational viewing pleasure…….. “The Hatchling”

That's SO cool, Danielle! Love it!! We've seen the exact same scene in Tahiti once with the kids - sooo exciting and a great science lesson alright!
