Driving with the Gordys

I’m blogging as we drive back from Wellington after 4 lovely days hanging with family & friends. Would like to say the kids are all sitting quietly, enjoying the scenery & planning synchronised toilet stops as we’re into the 3rd hour of the 8 hr trip home, but that would have to be another family, at least the music in the front drowns out some of the noise in the back!
I’ve got to say - every town should have an adventure part like the Levin one - our 10min lunch stop turned into nearly 2 hours with free train rides, a real live singing cowboy & a most impressive adventure playground - not to mention really bad coffee, but it’s doing the job! Shame our 8 hr trip will now be 10 hrs. Hours of requests for food, squabbles over air vents, seat space & who let off. Arms raised with shouts & hollers going over every single bridge. Melted chocolate biscuits. Polite conversations about speed limits. Jokes about looking for Charlottes vomit covered shorts we left at a rest area on our last trip down 3 years ago. Brotherly & sisterly love, parental tempers put to the test. Both quality & quantity time. Love my family. All of them, even the ones we left on the side of the road an hour back.
The drive home feels a bit like taking a big breath before once again being immersed in the busyness of the next few weeks preparing to depart the land of the long white cloud for the pearl of Africa. Thinking of everything that still needs to be done seems a bit daunting & at times an impossibility, but I’m really not panicing, in fact feel quite at peace with it all; somehow it will all get done & in 4 weeks I’ll be sitting on a plane feeling like I’m taking another big breath before beginning the adjustment of life in a totally new world.
