Feeling rather thankful...

Doesn’t seem to look quite as impressive in a photo – maybe if it was still on the van and you could see the skid marks on the road and me stranded with 7 kids it might look a bit more impressive, but I didn’t think to take the camera on our trip to return overdue library books!

Yes, it started out like any other trip in the van – in fact, our new foster boys first trip in the van with us. The van was making a strange knocking sort of sound as we took off, (which yes, I did pay attention to, and turned round to head back home, but as we got to the driveway the sound disappeared, I drove to the end of the street to check it out and no more noise. So, safe to continue with caution I thought – afterall, our books were 5 days overdue and at $12 a day I wanted to get them back!)

After navigating our way down our windy road with quite a steep bank along a big chunk of the road, I suddenly lost control when pulling over to let a car past me. It felt like the wheel had gone flying off, could feel the metal scraping along the road and had NO brakes! Drew tells me I pulled the handbrake on, which I vaguely remember doing! and we managed to come to a stop without hitting anything!! The wheel hadn’t come off, & I thought it just looked like a blowout, until Josiah pointed out that the disc brakes were in pieces and had shot through the rim (very good male type observation Joe!).

The best part of this was where we came to a stop……… Of the 15km or so journey we’d embarked upon (I know, embarked upon makes it sound a bit more adventurous than a library trip really is), we land right outside our good friends driveway (I mean RIGHT outside their drive!). AND they were both home!! Much better than down the side of the bank when going round one of our sharp corners, or into traffic once getting onto a busier road! Darren came to our rescue and changed the tyre so he could move the van further off the road. Where it stayed the night til very clever Daddy Bear could get parts and fix it the next day. Meantime…… we all enjoyed a few hours of playtime at the Woodys, til they got sick of us, offered to ferry us back home up the hill – and bring their motorbikes, and their dinner! Pete (who didn’t have his cell with him at work) gets home to find a table overflowing with friends, food, and tales of adventure! (HUGE thanks to Hannah R for the awesome dinner) Talk about God working all things together for good. We’re totally praising Him for looking after us, and blown away by His crazy goodness to us! What could’ve been a really horrible situation turned out to be a fun half day event! (Although a very expensive one!) And as for our new foster boy – Darrens his new best friend, cos van broke, Darren fix. Yes. Darren all our hero!!

f/boy LOVED the bikes. Mmmm, just noticed your safety footwear Pete
